CMG Freelance, in partnership with PWAC Toronto, is proud to present Writers’ Rights: Freelance Journalism in a Digital Age. This event will be a chance to make connections with industry peers and to discuss the ever-changing media landscape.
The afternoon will feature a keynote address from Nicole Cohen, an assistant professor at the Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology at the University of Toronto Mississauga. She is also the author of Writers’ Rights: Freelance Journalism in a Digital Age, a study of freelance journalists’ working conditions and what the future may hold for journalism in precarious times.
Other speakers for the afternoon will include:
Don Genova, CMG Freelance Branch president. Don is a longtime union activist as well as a freelance food and travel journalist.
Karen Lutrell, PWAC Toronto Chapter president, part-time communications professor and freelance writer, and
Katherine Lapointe, digital media organizer with CWA Canada, this country’s only all-media union, and it’s largest local, the Canadian Media Guild. Her work focuses on supporting media workers in collectively improving their working conditions and ensuring there are meaningful, sustainable jobs in the industry.
Snacks and non-alcoholic refreshments will be provided!
